Birding in Nanning City
First built in 318AD, Nanning is the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and has a total population of 6.61 million people dominated by Zhuang ethnic people. With Strong Ethnic Zhuang culture, Nanning covers 22,189 square kilometers and is located in the open coastal areas in east China. Sitting at the south side of Tropic of Cancer, Nanning has an average sea elevation of only 70 meters and enjoys a warm, monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate featuring hot and humid summer and mild and damp winter.
These positive factors have blessed Nanning with a large amount of biodiversity represented by many species of animals and more than 3,000 plant species. In China Nanning is one of the greenest cities and therefore being nicknamed as Green City. The geographical location, lush forests and unique climate attract large number of bird species and make the city an important birding place.

Shimen Forest Park
Sitting only about 5km from downtown Nanning, Shimen National Forest Part was built in 1995 covering 60 hectares. More than 80% of the park is covered by trees and it is very peaceful place. Here you have chance to see Grey-chinned Minivet, Long-tailed Minivet, Eurasian Jay, Red-billed Blue Magpie, Red-whiskered Bulbul, Light-vented Bulbul, Chestnut Bulbul, Common Tailorbird, Japanese Thrush, Taiga Flycatcher, Hainan Blue Flycatcher, etc.
Liangfengjiang Forest Park
Located in the southern suburban of Nanning, Liangfengjiang Forest Park is a hilly area about 7km from the city proper. The Liangfengjiang River flow through the middle of the park. Here you have chances of seeing some forest birds such as Fork-tailed Sunbird, Blue-winged Minla, Black Bulbul, Crested Honey-buzzard, Greater Coucal, Green-billed Malkoha, Chestnut Bulbul, Light-vented Bulbul, Common Tailorbird, Japanese Thrush, etc. By the side of the river, you may see some water birds such as White-breasted Waterhen, Chinese Pond Heron, Common Moorhen, etc.
The Campus of Guangxi University for Nationaties
Found in 1952, Guangxi University for Nationalities is situated by the side of scenic Xiangsihu Lake. Inside the campus, there is a small protected subtropical forest area where you have a chance to find some forest birds such as White-throated Plaintive Cuckoo, Asian Barred Owlet, Ashy Woodswallow, Hair-crested Drongo, Black-naped Monarch, Common Tailorbird, Yellow-bellied Prinia, Red-whiskered Bulbul, Yellow-browed Warbler, Chinese Blackbird, Grey-backed Thrush, Taiga Flycatcher, Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker, etc.
Guangxi Medical Botanical Garden
The Guangxi Medicinal Botanical Garden sits in Xiangzhu Street, Nanning, Guagnxi Province. Covering an area of 202 hectares, it is one of the largest botanical gardens in the country. Established in 1959, the Guangxi Medicinal Botanical Garden has collected and conserved over 5,600 medicinal plants, over 100 of which are precious and threatened plants. Here you have chances of seeing some forest birds such as Black Bulbul, Crested Goshawk, Greater Coucal, Plaintive Cuckoo, Indian Cuckoo, Asian Barred Owlet, Hair-crested Drongo, White-throated Fantail, Black-naped Monarch, Red-billed Blue Magpie, Red-whiskered Bulbul, Light-vented Bulbul, Mountain Bulbul, Mountain Tailorbird, Dusky Warbler, Yellow-bellied Prinia, Plain Prinia, Common Tailorbird, Rufous-capped Babbler, Masked Laughingthrush, Black-collared Starling, Taiga Flycatcher, Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker, Olive-backed Sunbird, Fork-tailed Sunbird, etc.
